CAN GIO PORT: A NEARLY USD 5 BILLION MEGA PORT IN HO CHI MINH CITY
Can Gio Port is becoming one of the most important maritime infrastructure projects in Ho Chi Minh City. With a total investment of nearly VND 129 trillion, or almost USD 5 billion, the project covers around 571 hectares and is designed to handle up to 16.9 million TEUs per year.
571 HECTARES AND NEARLY USD 5 BILLION IN INVESTMENT
Can Gio International Transshipment Port is planned in Thanh An Commune, Ho Chi Minh City, near the Cai Mep – Thi Vai deep-water port area.
One of the project's main features is a wharf system with a total planned length of around 7.5 km. The port is designed to receive container ships of up to 250,000 DWT or larger when conditions allow.
This will give Can Gio the ability to serve some of the world's largest container ships.
CAPACITY OF UP TO 16.9 MILLION TEUS
The port is expected to reach a capacity of around 4.8 million TEUs by 2030 and increase to 16.9 million TEUs by 2047.
For comparison, Tan Cang – Cat Lai handled around 5.8 million TEUs in 2024. Can Gio Port's long-term planned capacity is therefore almost three times this figure.
The large capacity could help Can Gio become an important international container transshipment hub in southern Vietnam.
STRATEGIC LOCATION NEAR CAI MEP – THI VAI
Another major advantage is its location near the Cai Mep – Thi Vai deep-water port complex.
The two port areas could support each other and help create a larger maritime and logistics hub at Vietnam's southern gateway.
With the ability to receive very large container ships, Can Gio Port could also attract more direct international shipping routes connecting Vietnam with Europe, North America and other major markets.
PARTICIPATION OF MSC'S ECOSYSTEM
The project is being developed by a consortium including Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), Saigon Port and Terminal Investment Limited Holding S.A. (TIL).
TIL is part of the MSC ecosystem, one of the world's largest container shipping groups. Its participation could support the port in attracting international shipping lines and cargo flows.
TOWARD AN INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS HUB
Can Gio Port is expected to support not only maritime transport but also the wider logistics industry in Ho Chi Minh City.
The project could create new opportunities for transportation, warehousing, maritime services and supply chains. It is also planned as a green and smart port, with strict environmental requirements.
The project is currently completing procedures toward construction, with the first phase targeted to begin operations in 2030.
With nearly USD 5 billion in investment, a planned capacity of 16.9 million TEUs and the ability to receive ships of up to 250,000 DWT, Can Gio Port could become an important part of Vietnam's international maritime and logistics network.
